Today was just the drive from North Bay to home; about 4 hours but we stopped off for a couple of hours to visit a high school friend in Huntsville. That helped my transition because I have endearing memories of the good times I spent on the site where his house now sits.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis-ntLgKsqttzwaK5pos_oNXtkTnqpSZzeQlcRYH7q5J1hJQpUAYUTv6w7UbhVuinJ_B-iVLcpC8lqDPP4nB4Ehg0ja_CUQHxqF2J8y-eEqBOScEYopozorN8ZOGeq8aKBn7xOx5D700jDgXfOX31nPFKVK9Yk3BmKXLQVggZqyLV-owhlzxe4ulKlQA/s2792/1%20Dave%20W.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1850" data-original-width="2792" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis-ntLgKsqttzwaK5pos_oNXtkTnqpSZzeQlcRYH7q5J1hJQpUAYUTv6w7UbhVuinJ_B-iVLcpC8lqDPP4nB4Ehg0ja_CUQHxqF2J8y-eEqBOScEYopozorN8ZOGeq8aKBn7xOx5D700jDgXfOX31nPFKVK9Yk3BmKXLQVggZqyLV-owhlzxe4ulKlQA/w400-h265/1%20Dave%20W.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuiqCShzBYJtpVAvMhbztGSZtcBRfE7FrJTMOMpMvl9myJ5y-9SZ9OCsk88XBqR5xkJSucYlZ4vsyYMyn-WfJ4DCfKjL5a68NRbyS_Gcm7bCaYZM9FTBIJVG3Yn298M2AHTG6V8c8_sPIJawBFw2OwGtYUovKWfsZezsk_7sbuWyX-vrwiKQcbYdoevg/s2263/2%20flower.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2198" data-original-width="2263" height="389" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuiqCShzBYJtpVAvMhbztGSZtcBRfE7FrJTMOMpMvl9myJ5y-9SZ9OCsk88XBqR5xkJSucYlZ4vsyYMyn-WfJ4DCfKjL5a68NRbyS_Gcm7bCaYZM9FTBIJVG3Yn298M2AHTG6V8c8_sPIJawBFw2OwGtYUovKWfsZezsk_7sbuWyX-vrwiKQcbYdoevg/w400-h389/2%20flower.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>The total distance for the trip was 7372.6 kilometres - I hate to think what that cost in gas! We woke up to find all the power in our room was out. All of it meant it was probably the whole house - which it was, in fact it was the whole town of Tadoussac. We were going to leave anyway, this just hastened our departure. That turned out to be a good thing. Even so, there was still time for a final farewell. I'd like to return in the fall sometime.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJqQ2TV46sC3BZA1btWdrvD5XJgPQFseuSYT0yxaL_VJfKBn5ioXQZFGlJXupkv9Id3ofLOLDtHZSsMpOLUYAHOpbC4p7crq3mFXHCw2J6YGbYtNehUjr46w5EZCPTcWCNoAVVd4QqMdZLI2ot1hM1R4J4oxPF6B0JuXx4cUQyoaPO2Cm3qvyV6MMaKA/s4032/1%20farewell%20to%20Tadoussac.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJqQ2TV46sC3BZA1btWdrvD5XJgPQFseuSYT0yxaL_VJfKBn5ioXQZFGlJXupkv9Id3ofLOLDtHZSsMpOLUYAHOpbC4p7crq3mFXHCw2J6YGbYtNehUjr46w5EZCPTcWCNoAVVd4QqMdZLI2ot1hM1R4J4oxPF6B0JuXx4cUQyoaPO2Cm3qvyV6MMaKA/w400-h300/1%20farewell%20to%20Tadoussac.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div>The very best part of our day took us through the gorgeous Saguenay region. I didn't like the place we had selected so, a whole other fiasco aside, we left and continued our drive. It was 5PM. There is precious little to choose from in these parts but we knew we would eventually find something. In the oh so travelling Whitehead way the first town of Senneterre was full. Just as well because dodgy would be too kind to describe the hotels/motels there. It was 9PM when we found a place in Val d'Or after being told at 4 places they were full as well. As is often the case, it was unexpectedly wonderful - that's oft times how we find the nicest places.</div></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6ZdaxlPdIW6L_c-PUIZTrYsL5O91e3q5yqzZ00fYtOHgxC6EvEowYpsu_pBxWR4KZ3K43pOCbgxi73c9HfpYhhQaDYVfWb7beq615A9Trx-_hrvApcAS7PFlqHG91WR_BgrcR7v7U8Ke0s0z-MdnVKbHKsndeiTzy0BNR__FJWgsN6IYbWqAOzkTqqg/s2702/4%20Val%20d'Or.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; As we left our hotel in Florenceville I was impressed to see the commitment New Brunswick has made to our environment by using wind power.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ2b2gcQkui83xrl3KHf9AW60Fgnq4Fq-wvNoEI5FJYV0pMaMq63VNNqBRTkXz4UdtuqTUzdf6sTVgI-83LFyPT9X7sR9JucgYVzXNoiWHflrhm8-FFKyO2JFBIcnd28wBNCA3Pka4eQzN2X7fELHE5CXWMJhvHhzv6ZTOISJoDRF-DAluVWZWWrzoYQ/s4032/1%20NB%20cares.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ2b2gcQkui83xrl3KHf9AW60Fgnq4Fq-wvNoEI5FJYV0pMaMq63VNNqBRTkXz4UdtuqTUzdf6sTVgI-83LFyPT9X7sR9JucgYVzXNoiWHflrhm8-FFKyO2JFBIcnd28wBNCA3Pka4eQzN2X7fELHE5CXWMJhvHhzv6ZTOISJoDRF-DAluVWZWWrzoYQ/w400-h300/1%20NB%20cares.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>We were going to take the ferry from Riviere du Loup to Saint Simeon because we were headed for Tadoussac for two nights. We got there two hours early as there are no reservations so were in the first of 8 or 10 lines about 10 cars back. This was going to be a full ship. About half an hour before sailing our line started to move so we filed out like sheep. We left the parking area and headed out toward the highway. My first instinct was "Hey, there's no boat here." I thought maybe the ship could not dock here, after all it was low tide, so we had to meet it somewhere else. After about ten minutes on the highway I thought WTF we're not going to any boat. Two hours later we were in Quebec City.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdMSBg3IprWvUcF4hgL184X83RFS8EM8nyq3JPypYHowKYzwXtRRlYY2XmGSa-ZpVToQIhFlkTywyZtqAQ1aeUcSC5IpgEzAhVRWWtO1uXuG39CJItk0drrychpo3B1m5oKI3iqP0HYr5faYH2WPpRfb6mIgeK4RrU-kIG47myeYpp7zOgPuU63T5t8A/s4032/2%20Riviere%20du%20Loup%20ferry.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdMSBg3IprWvUcF4hgL184X83RFS8EM8nyq3JPypYHowKYzwXtRRlYY2XmGSa-ZpVToQIhFlkTywyZtqAQ1aeUcSC5IpgEzAhVRWWtO1uXuG39CJItk0drrychpo3B1m5oKI3iqP0HYr5faYH2WPpRfb6mIgeK4RrU-kIG47myeYpp7zOgPuU63T5t8A/w400-h300/2%20Riviere%20du%20Loup%20ferry.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>It took us three hours to get out and headed back north on the other side of the river. The problem was both our GPS's took us to highways whose access was closed and barricaded. It was 8 o'clock by the time we found a place in Baie Saint Paul in the Charlevoix region of Quebec. That means we will only have one day in Tadoussac. We called them and tried to get a second day added to our current booking. They were good enough to not charge us for cancelling today as we were well past the cancellation cutoff but were full for the day after our booking.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSdnAbAz1XC0XbXOPcKJuRfAOAToPwZyQ5av6VqCbI1CWtQyNYrCkZR585Gy97YlbrGATHH4sH975JYiHbdyDHgUkymfQrWe5I7YgE8bMkZdFbXeHkWKh6zKrY5DI51UiZ5hhv2m-DFAyIPqn8a-ICD392_fimvWAVUObFVqfrwhy6VWSPdC7jMHRv2w/s4032/3%20Charlevoix%20region%20-%20Quebec.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSdnAbAz1XC0XbXOPcKJuRfAOAToPwZyQ5av6VqCbI1CWtQyNYrCkZR585Gy97YlbrGATHH4sH975JYiHbdyDHgUkymfQrWe5I7YgE8bMkZdFbXeHkWKh6zKrY5DI51UiZ5hhv2m-DFAyIPqn8a-ICD392_fimvWAVUObFVqfrwhy6VWSPdC7jMHRv2w/w400-h300/3%20Charlevoix%20region%20-%20Quebec.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p> The Charlevoix region is gorgeous - no, there are no moose.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUfcf-23vizer2qPKAvhaL0VpK91aYZ5fa9MtAFrY2AWDZqeXCIAl6_cdnacykIjv9Imc-YOIozaO7Zxsg5q7uzbY3eBEVW4f1R6NuZHS0E62xvw3-lZIelJaPvpPnFtI7vlMsMfq-EYf7Srbx3LWU5k-LdgZjiPUmzDFGccfyiES7pAlEiuE0ehlxhw/s3378/4%20Hotel%20Baie%20Saint%20Paul.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2172" data-original-width="3378" height="258" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUfcf-23vizer2qPKAvhaL0VpK91aYZ5fa9MtAFrY2AWDZqeXCIAl6_cdnacykIjv9Imc-YOIozaO7Zxsg5q7uzbY3eBEVW4f1R6NuZHS0E62xvw3-lZIelJaPvpPnFtI7vlMsMfq-EYf7Srbx3LWU5k-LdgZjiPUmzDFGccfyiES7pAlEiuE0ehlxhw/w400-h258/4%20Hotel%20Baie%20Saint%20Paul.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>We're nearing the end so I hope there are no more days like today.</p>Eric Whiteheadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17565184921707643141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-372156222475195219.post-6711653205900922452022-07-16T15:06:00.000-07:002022-07-16T15:06:11.941-07:00Maritimes Trip - Day 24<p>The drive to the Confederation Bridge from the east end of the island was under 2 hours so we had time to enjoy the last of PEI for us...them old tater fields back home.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtvLG6RKmZlIN-az_Iaw475PvQF0ZXCGmU5S56dKXdGlBb0R7fJamKfSAEPYEV9gU-NrbzfUanlvGkdjzoGeB0pEG-PWuAVsYF1DXzJzUNeYnW41SPd7KuRnm68ILSOd18S4PxVSlEAzNHHD9TKEyb6Wu1xJ8uZ5d-usOEE8NwjooRZq_LLms4O5yF7Q/s4032/1%20them%20old%20tater%20fields%20back%20home.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtvLG6RKmZlIN-az_Iaw475PvQF0ZXCGmU5S56dKXdGlBb0R7fJamKfSAEPYEV9gU-NrbzfUanlvGkdjzoGeB0pEG-PWuAVsYF1DXzJzUNeYnW41SPd7KuRnm68ILSOd18S4PxVSlEAzNHHD9TKEyb6Wu1xJ8uZ5d-usOEE8NwjooRZq_LLms4O5yF7Q/w400-h300/1%20them%20old%20tater%20fields%20back%20home.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div>Crossing the bridge to New Brunswick was quite a bit different than it was the day we crossed to PEI. Lighthouses were the name of the game today at both West Point (no, not that West Point) and North Cape. PEI is an amazing province. Go visit if you have not been there. You will not regret it.</p><p>The airbnb we are staying at is in Clinton. We're here for two nights to finish things off. What a place. An Inn of sorts, there are 11 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms with a veranda that surrounds the place looking out to fields reminiscent of a high class golf course. It was quite a treat for us watching bald eagles soar overhead as we ate dinner.</p><p>The internet here is basically inoperable - slow does not do it justice. A weekend music festival had attracted thousands and most of them were leaving as we crossed the Confederation Bridge. The back up was over 8 kilometres long. As great a sight as that was to me there were still thousands left. It's extremely busy here. We are in a Holiday Inn Express for one night in Charlottetown,</p><p>We arrived on the island around noon so did a little exploring before checking in to the hotel. When we were last in PEI (1984) the central scenic route was called the Blue Heron Drive. That is now the Central Coastal Drive and is the route we chose today. In a word, PEI is beautiful. Near Kensington we went off the route to the St. Mary's Historic Church. Damnit! Yes it was. Not a good start to the day. Gavin found a tire shop (online) on our route out of town. I was shocked how many places he called - all saying they were booked and could not help us even though it was a bit of an emergency - even Subaru - they'll be hearing from me. We just about had to empty the back to get to the locknut kit required to remove a Subaru wheel.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-SrgBVFMRE4V-k1qZqn6EJo0ejI-LMz5vyeGj0cDUgBCLb1CQdrznAx3WCVEchnwTlOQuSSi1KsAHNqVDB2Dkp1spRobCW5qOtQJWZM2UDZP92Qhho-QWrsNC4T-3uef6KxVU6vNDCh_OKBQ20AeEvkZevliz3fSZZHsksT1BbuWLlv4s1Xesyt7nuQ/s3486/1%20tire%20repair.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3486" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-SrgBVFMRE4V-k1qZqn6EJo0ejI-LMz5vyeGj0cDUgBCLb1CQdrznAx3WCVEchnwTlOQuSSi1KsAHNqVDB2Dkp1spRobCW5qOtQJWZM2UDZP92Qhho-QWrsNC4T-3uef6KxVU6vNDCh_OKBQ20AeEvkZevliz3fSZZHsksT1BbuWLlv4s1Xesyt7nuQ/w348-h400/1%20tire%20repair.jpg" width="348" /></a></div><div><br /></div>The rest of the day was pretty well just driving. In 2012 their chocolate factory in Syria was destroyed by bombs. They emigrated to Antigonish, NS in Canada where they rebuilt their factory and became a rapid success. Here's where the story gets touching. They began pouring a percentage back into the economy of the country that took them in and the rest, as they say, is history. There's a valuable lesson in their journey. I hate crowds at the best of times but today was an absolute zoo. We came through Lunenburg and, yes, we pretty much just drove through. It was so busy there were very few places to stop much less park. Managed to take a quick walk and see some of the historic homes but nothing else.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrltlnBfhKyMZw-TKBq3tEZKyDobY2OkHR8qs44FggnoPSmH8HWqbQoQg5nWWmH8hwFCzxokdUWA0DGPaMTuEa1FfQmxDYnp0gJeJfR184mMBIhIzRlrp_BDfduLEjCrf9vKFqbPI6p3opOaAM7zhVYNurd0aZPJjV8cFC_vTGUyN-R9IpvW9WVDYb1w/s5184/1%20Lunenburg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3888" data-original-width="5184" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrltlnBfhKyMZw-TKBq3tEZKyDobY2OkHR8qs44FggnoPSmH8HWqbQoQg5nWWmH8hwFCzxokdUWA0DGPaMTuEa1FfQmxDYnp0gJeJfR184mMBIhIzRlrp_BDfduLEjCrf9vKFqbPI6p3opOaAM7zhVYNurd0aZPJjV8cFC_vTGUyN-R9IpvW9WVDYb1w/w400-h300/1%20Lunenburg.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>Peggys Cove was even worse. The cars were parked on the highway for a kilometre on either side of the entrance, all spots were full on the grounds - there must have been 10,000 people there. Peggys Cove is a place every Canadian should see and enjoy - just don't try it in the summer.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_wLc6BeUkfKDg46Rd60cJaw-s7elDkadeMYVM7-jsEmY-zP9DMSjZK9eByp9vnuEBHNzshiJt_HMlcW5XR4b8ZNQn9uzhV5nMOF4l30v4sLTnuKsECkqInT6TfRn3doaxKKtHjjoQ8cer8MH2GnFscDeHZuOGfslsM_L6gr27uI39ZeN0VFqOP7CwYQ/s5184/2%20Peggys%20Cove.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3888" data-original-width="5184" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_wLc6BeUkfKDg46Rd60cJaw-s7elDkadeMYVM7-jsEmY-zP9DMSjZK9eByp9vnuEBHNzshiJt_HMlcW5XR4b8ZNQn9uzhV5nMOF4l30v4sLTnuKsECkqInT6TfRn3doaxKKtHjjoQ8cer8MH2GnFscDeHZuOGfslsM_L6gr27uI39ZeN0VFqOP7CwYQ/w400-h300/2%20Peggys%20Cove.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>We got an email from Gayle in Mineville asking if we could squeeze a quick visit in before they leave for Ontario in the early morning. Brier Island was wonderful but today we travel to Shelburne, an historic Black Loyalist location. The scenery was not what I expected. Once you're away from the water (which was more than half the time) you'd swear you were in northern Ontario.</p><p>We passed through Yarmouth also a very historic area. Lots of grand old homes and very sedate fishing village atmosphere outside the city in Yarmouth Bar.
