May 4, 2024 - Day 5

We left Victoria at 8AM on a drizzly morning but the beautiful Vancouver Island countryside soon took our minds off the weather.

I'm not one for bird watching but when it comes to large predatory avians I can't resist. The Pacific Northwest Raptors (now does that not sound like a professional sports team to you?) Their compound is fabulous. These amazing silent predators of the skies are protected here, many threatened or critically endangered. They do important work for our planet so we were only too happy to support the cause. Thank you Rita for the suggestion.

Bald Eagle

Harris Hawk

Great Horned Owl

Founded as a logging town in 1858, Chemainus' main street has been revitalized through the painting of large outdoor murals. That's Canada - hidden treasures found country-wide.

Tomorrow - as far north as you can drive on the island.

  1. Eric, my son Ben has his Maple Bay Hop Farm next door to the raptor farm, and often have visits from those impressive birds!
